Welcome to this week's business tip. My name is Rueben Taylor, Perth business mentor and founder of Business Wealth Educators.
Most business owners I meet are getting caught up in the day to day running of their business. They are working the hard grind, dealing with customer after customer. This actually keeps a business stuck. It keeps a business owner limited to where they can actually take their business.
What's the key to changing this? Where do they need to start focusing their time? Instead of focusing on the next “thing” or what I call "work that you do once and get paid once for" we need to focus somewhere else. If you do the work once and get paid once, you are only going to be exchanging time for money all the time. We need to start asking a better question and that's the question "How can I leverage?” The definition of leverage quite simply is how I do more with less. How do I get more done with less of my time? How do I get more done in the business with less input?
Think of it this way, there are certain things you can do that you do the work for once and you get paid once. But you could do the work once and get paid over and over again. Let me give you an example. What if you came up with a new marketing strategy for your business? You could do the work once, create the marketing strategy and all of a sudden you can keep running that strategy. That gives you leverage because it keeps creating more and more business. What about writing a system? You write that once, you could train a dozen, hundreds, even thousands of people that can use the same system. Writing a book - you write it once, you can sell it many times.
There are lots of different ways you can create leverage in your business. Even a video like this one; record a video. Next time you train a team member, record it on video then lots of team members can watch it. The same team member can watch it again and again and again. It's leveraging your time. Or in marketing - record a video like this for your marketing and then it can sit on your website, it can sit on a Youtube. You can optimize it; you can start generating more and more business by recording a video once.
